Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The carpal tunnel is located in the center of the wrist. The transverse carpal tunnel which housesnine tendons and the median nerve. When there is swelling within the tunnel, pressure is put on the nerve. Pain, numbness and tingling may result.

Most Common Symptoms:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Burning
  • Pain in the fingers, hand and wrist that may extend up to the shoulder

Treatment Options:

  • Conservative Treatments:
  • Restrict wrist motion
  • Avoid forceful gripping
  • Night splinting
  • Anti-flammatory medication (ie. Motin)
  • Steriod injections

Conservative treatment manages symptoms but may not result in resolution of the condition.

 

Surgical Treatments:

When symptoms do not improve with non-surgical treatment, surgery may be elected to release the transverse carpal ligament to alleviate pressure placed on the median nerve.
