What is the OAM (Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan) NextGen Patient Portal?
The patient portal is a web-based, secure, HIPAA-compliant communication tool for patients and their healthcare providers.  The portal is used for non-urgent requests. Through OAM NextGen Patient Portal, you will be able to:
• Communicate with our practice and your provider
• Request appointments and receive appointment reminders
• Access important health information from your medical record
• View your medication list and request prescription refills
• Maintain account information
• Pay your bill online

What are the minimum requirements to access the NextGen Patient Portal?
• You need access to a computer
• You need access to the internet
• You need access to a browser

How do I sign up for the NextGen Patient Portal?
In order to log into the portal for the first time, you will need our office to assign you a token number. You can request a token number in several ways:
• In person at our office
• By calling 616-459-7101, extension # 138
• Filling out our Contact Form found here click here

Your token is a unique identifier you will use, along with your full name and date of birth, to log into the NextGen Patient Portal for the first time. The first time you log in, you will click on the new patient link and follow the directions to enter your token. Once you have logged in for the first time and established your own personal ID and password, you will no longer need your token.

My token doesn’t work, what should I do?
For your security, your token expires after 30 days if you have not used it to activate your account. If your token has expired, please contact us to obtain a new one.

Is my token my NextGen Patient Portal ID?
No, your token is not your NextGen Patient Portal ID or password. You will use this code only once to log into your NextGen Patient Portal for the first time. (The code will expire after you have used it or after 30 days). During your first NextGen Patient Portal session, you will create your own unique NextGen Patient Portal ID and password.

Can I create my own password and change it when I want?
Yes, you can. Please keep your password confidential and do not share it with anyone else. You may change your password online at any time. Go to the “My Account” tab and then to the “Account Settings” section to edit your password. Your password is not known by anyone at Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan. If you believe someone has found out your password, please change it.

What do I do if I forgot my username or password, or the NextGen Patient Portal tells me “login unsuccessful”?
Make sure your Caps Lock key is not on. The password field is case sensitive. Make sure you do not enter extra spaces in either the NextGen Patient Portal ID or password boxes and try again. If you have forgotten your ID or password, click on the “Don’t remember your user name or password?” link and fill in the form. If you continue to have difficulty, contact us at 616-459-7101, extension # 138

The NextGen Patient Portal logged me out. What happened?
The NextGen patient portal is protecting your privacy. While logged into the NextGen Patient Portal, if your keyboard remains idle for 20 minutes or more, you will be automatically logged out. Any information you have typed will be lost. We recommend that you log out of your NextGen Patient Portal session if you need to leave your computer.

I have been locked out of my account, how can I unlock it?
Accounts can become locked after three unsuccessful login attempts, but will automatically unlock after 20 minutes.

I am not receiving alerts to my regular email when I have new NextGen Patient Portal information. What is wrong?
Login into the NextGen Patient Portal and edit your email address in the “My Information” section under the “My Account” tab. Make sure that your email address has been accurately entered. Make sure that the “Receive notifications at this email address” box is checked. Then click the “update” button. The email notification can also get lost in your Spam filter. Search your spam folder and correct the filter to prevent it from identifying these notifications as Spam. Even if the notification was lost, any messages or documents that were sent via NextGen can be retrieved by logging into the NextGen Patient Portal and reviewing your inbox.

I have a new email address, phone number, or street address; how can I change it?
Login into the NextGen Patient Portal and click on the “My Account” tab. Go to the “My Information” section and click the “Edit or Add” button next to the item you wish to change or add.  Then click “Update or Add” button to save the information.

Some of my health information on NextGen Patient Portal is not correct. How can I get this corrected?
Your NextGen Patient Portal information comes directly from your electronic medical record at Orthopedic Associates of Michigan. Ask our office to correct any inaccurate information at your next office visit. Your health information is reviewed and updated in your electronic medical record during each visit.

Are there any charges for using the NextGen Patient Portal?
No, the NextGen Patient Portal is a complimentary tool from Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan. It provides secure and convenient web access to your doctor and to your Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan medical record.

How is my personal health information secured by the NextGen Patient Portal?
Your NextGen Patient Portal personal health information is carried over a secure, encrypted connection. This secure connection utilizes industry standard Secure Socket Layer (SSL) 128-bit encryption as well as a server-side digital certificate authentication to ensure secure data transmission between you and Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan. To prohibit unauthorized access, all medical information is stored safely behind our firewall in our electronic medical record system.

Why are certain lab results not shared electronically via the NextGen Patient Portal?
Your provider needs to release your lab results before they can be viewed in the NextGen Patient Portal. There are times when a physician may feel talking with you directly is a better way to communicate a result. If you are looking for a lab result that is not listed, please send us a message through the portal and we will respond.

Can I print from the NextGen Patient Portal?
Yes, the NextGen Patient Portal includes a print icon   on most pages.

May I request access to my child or another adult’s NextGen Patient Portal information?
You are authorized to access to your child’s NextGen Patient Portal information until the minor child turns 18 years old, when proxy access to their NextGen Patient Portal will be disabled. Access can be re-activated with the patient’s written authorization.
Another adult may request in writing that you be given access to their NextGen Patient Portal information. Once you have access in either situation, you can view their health information, ask questions, and request appointments and prescription refills.
