Team 5 begins in Haiti – 2/12

You never really know what to expect until you step onto the tarmac at Port-au-Prince among the Blackhawk helicopters, US Army transport, planes, tents and soldiers in Humvees.

We landed safely and greeted our brothers and sisters leaving to return home. All had smiles and most felt what has been described as the happiness to return home and the pull to stay and continue to help!  Contrast of emotions to say the least.

It was chaotic getting our supplies into vans and on the road but Marie, our physical therapist and translator, got us through and on the way to Double Harvest.

Today was the beginning of a 3-day fast and grieving period for the Haitians marking the one-month anniversary of the earthquake. Many Haitians have not had the time or opportunity to mourn the loss of their homes, families and friends.

Richard, our chef, was delighted at the supplies we brought him and I am hoping to convince him to stay another week.

We will be in the OR tomorrow and begin the logistics of patient transfer and an attempt to define the orthopaedic environment here in Haiti. My salute to team 4 for preparing our patients and us for the trade off today. All in all it was smooth.

Goodnight and God bless.
